Obverse: ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 2009 (Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith), fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, crowned with the girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, IRB below truncation for designer Ian Rank-Broadley. Reverse: 1973 / 50 / PENCE, Surrounded by circle of nine hands, symbolising the nine members of the EEC, clasping one another in a mutual gesture of trust, assistance and friendship, by designer David Wynne. First issued in 1973, this coin was reissued in 2009 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the fifty pence. These piedfort coins of this series were limited to a mintage of only 40 coins.
