A mule is the incorrect pairing of obverse and reverse dies. The obverse of this 1994 Bank of England issue should have included the denomination "TWO POUNDS" as this was not included in the commemorative reverse. An unknown number of coins were struck and issued in gold using the obverse die that was intended for the Double Sovereign. The Royal Mint wrote to its retail customers inviting them to return the error coins for replacement with the correct design. No details are known as to how many were returned, nor how many exist in the market.
